The games market is huge there is no doubt about that and year on year it is on the rise so look out CD and DVD sales. Back in the old days game sound was just thrown for the sake of it, of course now it would seem that a very long time indeed is spent developing the soundtrack for a major game. Why on earth is this happening?
First let’s think about it in regards to a film, what would Star Wars or something like that be without its soundtrack? Of course Star Wars would certainly still have turned out to be a great film but it really is the soundtrack that makes that story a lot clearer. This is what is being picked up by the big game developers and music is being given more time, more thought and most importantly, a bigger budget.
How about those games like Halo and COD, the music plays as you enter a certain area of the game or something of importance happens, this really helps to tell the story. This is exactly what happens in the film industry.
Another important thing to take into consideration is the amount of artists that want to work with games nowadays, instruments that wouldn’t work in a film work perfectly in a game, takebanjos as an example for the much loved Banjo Kazooie franchise.
Albums of the game soundtracks are being released and even better they are being purchased and the soundtracks are made from all kinds of instruments from electro acoustic guitars to the simple electric guitars.
It would certainly seem that the music we hear in video game is becoming more and more important as the years go by.
Expect to hear better sounding game soundtracks as the years progress.
