Well, you might wish to begin looking for a box set of the 26- program long anime drama serial Mushishi. (Each individual program is 25 minutes.) Highly respected anime director Hiroshi Nagahama is the driving force behind this supernatural serial, which delves deeply into psychological analysis through the main character, who is named Ginko (does he have a sharp memory?). Howl’s Moving Castle takes place in another Tolkiensque fantasy realm, where we are viewing and hearing demons and witches, wizards and sorcerers living in the countryside and rural towns. After having a curse put on her by the appropriate embodiment of wickedness, the Wicked Witch of the West, the character Sophie ends up working as a scullery maid (and housekeeper) at the Castle, where she eventually meets its owner, the female-magnet wizerd Howl. Much adventure ensues.
Anime fans also talk of some “hidden gems” that should be sought out at the discount DVD store. These include such titles as Last Exile (about a wicked, powerful Guild dominating a fantasy world), Wolf’s Rain (about wolves who can shapeshift into humans trying to attain Paradise), and Tokyo Godfathers (the name says it all).
