Joe Dirt is a comedy film made in 2001. It stars David Spade, Dennis Miller, and Christopher Walken. Spade plays the lead role. David Spade also wrote the movie.
Joe Dirt wasn’t much of a success with the critics. It has an average rating of three out of 10 and one of the well-known multiple review sites. Roger Ebert and his partner Richard Roeper both gave the movie a resounding thumbs down. They called it strained and predictable and said the storyline was absurd. However, they did complement Spade’s performance.
It pulled in nearly $30 million in the USA. That means Joe Dirt movie was profitable. It cost $16 million to make. It was the top movie in New Zealand. Some of the stars quipped that New Zealand was smaller than WalMart. The movie is often discussed by Dennis Miller. He’s even interviewed David Spade about it.
Strange character Joe Dirt works as a janitor at a Los Angeles radio station. A producer sees Joe being bullied in the hall and decides that his white trash attitude could become popular. As a result he puts Joe on the air to be interviewed by a disc jockey. Most of the movie consists of Joe relating his life in this interview.
The story of Joe Dirt begins with the pursuit of his love interest Brandy. When Brandy’s dog dies Joe feels the need to seek out his parents. He travels the country. He has many strange adventures. He also meets a number of odd characters. He also takes on many odd jobs. The last of these is his job in the boiler room of the radio station.
Joe Dirt finally decides to return to Brandy. She knew all along that his parents were dead. His whole search has been in vain.
The listeners love Joe Dirt. He has gained a lot of fame. His mother, supposedly, calls him. But it’s just a trick. She’s trying to sell figurines using his name. Both she and his father want to get rich off of him.
At the end of the movie Joe Dirt tries to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge. An officer saves him with a bungee cord. But he hits his head on the way back up. He awakens with all the people he’s met surrounding him. He has finally found a family. That’s pretty silly. Critics hated it for good reason.
The sad thing is Joe Dirt isn’t the worst movie ever made.
