Critics weren’t kind to Joe Dirt. Reviews usually gave it a three on a ten point scale. It received a thumbs down from Ebert. They called it strained and predictable and said the storyline was absurd. They did like Spade in the movie.
It earned over $25 million in the US market. That means Joe Dirt was profitable. Its budget was only $16 million. It also made it to number one in New Zealand. Some of the stars quipped that New Zealand was smaller than WalMart. Dennis Miller often mentions the movie. He and Spade have discussed it.
Strange character Joe Dirt works as a janitor at a Los Angeles radio station. A producer sees Joe being bullied in the hall and decides that his white trash attitude could become popular. He puts Joe with a disc jockey who interviews him on the air. The movie is Joe telling his story.
Joe Dirt loves a girl named Brandy. Her dog dies, so Joe decides to look for his parents. He travels far and wide. He has many strange adventures. A lot of strange folks meet him along the way. He also takes on many odd jobs. The radio station job is one.
Joe Dirt finally decides to return to Brandy. She knew all along that his parents were dead. The search was for nothing.
Joe Dirt has become popular with listeners. He’s a celebrity. His mother, supposedly, calls him. But it’s just a trick. She’s trying to sell figurines using his name. They really are his parents, but they’ve only contacted him to make money.
Then Joe Dirt tries to kill himself. He’s saved by a bungee cord. He rebounds right into the bridge. He later wakes up at Brandy’s house surrounded by many of the people he’s met on his journey. He realizes that these are his family members. That’s not much of a plot. Critics hated it for good reason.
The sad thing is Joe Dirt isn’t the worst movie ever made.
