What do a movie, a novel, a television series and a band have in common?  They share the name the Devil Wears Prada.  This article focuses on the movie starring Meryl Streep.

The Devil Wears Prada was a hit as a novel.  Hollywood decided to make a movie out of it.  Because novels have an audience, Hollywood loves turning them into movies.  It’s guaranteed that a % of the readers will see the movie no matter what.  So that gives Hollywood an idea that there will be a base audience.  That reduces the risk that a movie will lose money.  Lower risk is a good thing in the movie business.

The Devil Wears Prada film is loosely based on the novel. A lot of condensing has to go on to fit it into a 90 or 120 minute time slot.  Concrete is the foundation of most buildings.  But look up, the building isn’t concrete.  It’s generally steel and glass.  Go in expecting these differences.

The Devil Wears Prada plot goes like this. A journalism school graduate lands a dream job as assistant to the editor of a prominent fashion magazine. Once on the job she’s a fish out of water. But gradually she begins to dress more stylishly and act more like the people she once made fun of. When a coworker who often makes fun of her makes a big mistake Andrea saves the day. As a result she’s asked to accompany her boss to a fashion show in Paris. While there she witnesses her boss ruthlessly destroy a coworker in order to save her own position.

Her eyes open to the fact that she’s becoming like her boss.  She decides to leave the magazine in favor of a newspaper writing job.  The editor and others at the magazine now respect her.  In fact it’s her former boss who gives her the recommendation that gives her the job at the newspaper.

The Devil Wears Prada was very popular. It’s possibly due to two reasons. One, as stated earlier, movies based on novels have a built in audience. More than likely many former readers went out to see the movie. Secondly, it’s a good story with a moral. It shows that in some professions people have to act ruthlessly to get ahead. But when people are true to themselves, they can find success.
